I don’t care what you do or what you’re passionate about, I think you’ll benefit from Steven Pressfield’s amazing “self help” book, The War of Art. war of art_book

Yes, it’s by a well known author and is directed at other writers, but I’m finding amazing advice here about life as a whole. In it he identifies the greatest obstacle we face in pursuing our dreams: resistance.

Is sounds obvious and simple, and in a way it is. But Pressfield takes this premise and ruthlessly shows how powerful it is, and how we often use excuses, procrastination, addictions, and rationalizations to feed the resistance.

As opposed to feeding our muse.

That muse can be tied to any number of things: writing, drawing, building, teaching, entrepreneurship, philanthropy. Doesn’t matter what your focus is, the issue is why you aren’t doing it.

Pressfield is no softie. This is the “tough love” approach to self-help and motivation, sans positive affirmations or exercises in visualization. Those have their places, but Pressfield writes about the nitty-gritty aspects of overcoming the blocks we set in place to hamper ourselves.

I really can’t recommend this book enough. It’s not just for those with writer’s block or a dream of a gallery opening, it’s for all of us in the trenches of creation, clawing our way through the mud towards our goals.

Buy it. Read it. Absorb it. LIVE IT.
