Life Without Sugar, Week One

Jul 9, 2013 | Health, Modus Operandi | 4 comments

It may be that not one of you gives a flying hootenanny about health issues, particularly my health issues. I can accept that.

But IF YOU DO, then let it be known: I am at the end of the first full week of living without sugar.

Why the madness, you ask? Well it’s not entirely about fat loss, it’s also about sleeping patterns and IBS and acid reflux and a tricky back and other health issues. It true that father only died because he drank himself to death, otherwise he’d be still around at 90+ years old. However, my mother’s health…well, that is one frightening barrel to sight down. So while I hope I got my father’s everlasting immortal hillbilly genes, I can’t ignore the fact that there is a 50% chance I ended up with my mother’s fruit-fly style “live fast die young” markers.

I’m not hear to mock or preach about one food paradigm over the other; I have strong opinions but it’s not my place to force everyone to see things my way (although  you should, of course!). But what has worked best for me, health wise, is a primarily paleo diet plan.

The problem is, I’ve found that I’m one of those people who is addicted to sugar. Physically and psychologically, I want that stuff. ALL THE SUGAR NOM NOM NOM. It’s been a shocker of a revelation, and I have not taken to it well. In fact when I first toyed with the idea my best response was to curl up with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream…yeah, watch me do adult!

Put this all together, and you see where I’m going: cutting out the sweet stuff.

For me this is de facto a low carb diet, but the focus is more about “do not eat junk”, because FFS most prepared foods today are just brimming with added sugar. Spaghetti sauce, barbeque sauce, all baked goods (including just plain bread!), even things like sausage and deli meats have added sugar. That crap is everywhere!

Some people can process all of that just fine, thanks very much and bring on the cinnebons.

Me, not so much. As in, not at all.

It’s been tough. I’ve gone through that “low carb flu” thing that resulted in bad headaches and, for all practical purposes, narcolepsy. Yes, I’m eating fruits and veggies and protein and nuts. All good, solid, clean, natural food. Bring it!

In the meantime, I’m going to bed early.

…onward to week two!
